If you are a lifeguard and you know you are not the best lifeguard in the world, you have proof that other people are better being a lifeguard than you and there is someone drowning a few feet in front of you, should you rescue them? Or should you run away and hope a better-qualified lifeguard will do it? The answer is pretty obvious you had rescued them. Because the drowning person doesn’t really care if you are the best lifeguard. They simply care that you showed up for them and if we can think of our work as generous then we are not taking anything, we are simply giving something.
